What would Ferenczi Do?

What would Ferenczi Do?

Ferenczi would be an ardent Zionist.  There are hints in his clinical journal, there was precedent (other psychoanalysts were headed to Palestine to settle as intellectuals in both Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, Max Steiner, furrier, for example.  Ferenczi loved life, was a participant in cafe society.  He was social.  He loved the ladies.  He was a flirt.

Ferenczi cared about people becoming their best selves ever.  If he weren't sick by the time Hitler took over, he would have emigrated.  Somewhere.  Probably New York, where he had established roots in 1926.  Perhaps he would have mended fences with Rank.

Ferenczi's Clinical Journal is chock-a-block with foreshadowing of his incipient pernicious anemia.  He writes of fatigue, of falling asleep on patients.  If he wasn't ashamed of being vulnerable, perhaps he would have been better prepared.  Perhaps he could have prepared his patients.  But he wasn't and he didn't.

But in any case, Ferenczi and his friends would have been aghast at Hamas destruction.  He would have supported Zionist causes.  He would have clucked his tongue over the similarities between his psychoanalytic brethren--who all attacked each other publically, posturing purity in the name of Freud, and the Middle Eastern Brethren--same issue, different words.    He would have stood firm with the Israeli cause, if only because all Jews, regardless of their vision, are one.  Schma Yisroel, Adonai, Eluhaini, Adonai, Echad.

How can I support this?  After WWI, Ferenczi saw his beloved Budapest turn fascist.  The Law of Effect, which gave all religious freedom, as long as they obeyed Hungarian laws, was toppled.  Horthy's white terror raged through the land.  Slaying.  Raping.  Terrorizing.   Pogroms.  Anti-Jewish acts and laws.  Ferenczi served as a physician in WWI.  The liberalization of divorce laws finally allowed Giselle and he to wed.  And they could no longer socialized in cafe society, because of these pogroms.

Like Freud, he witnessed how refugees from pogroms fled to Germany, to Hungary,  to America.  Anywhere where one can live without being terrorized and targeted merely because one is Jewish, trying to live their lives while celebrating their religion.

Hungary witnessed this during the 150 years of  Law of Effect.  Jews became lawyers, doctors, artists, writers, athletes (most of the pre-WWI Hungarian Olympic Swim Team was Jewish).  Few went into bureaucracy--still anti-Semitic.  Many sought to trade in their financial wealth for a noble title (hence, Jewish daughters and sons traded in to gain a noble name.  Even if the noble one was a hellion Anti-Semite responsible for past and future destruction of Jews--Bleichsroder/Bismarck, anyone?)

Support Hamas--support pogroms.  Whatever one thinks of the background, one cannot support satanic terrorist organizations.  No matter who did what to who in the past, this is now.  And Hamas is wrong.  Hamas has betrayed the Palestinian cause.  Because at least in pogroms, Cossacks got Jewish wealth without retribution.  Palestinians won't get their land back.  They won't get their homes back.  Because, unlike pogroms, there will be vengeance.  Disproportionate.

Ferenczi lives.  Israel lives.  We will never be defeated.  Am Israel Chai!
